black and white. always the same problems.
come on people..
why the jamaican singers? because they created this anti-batti-movement in their songs. in dancehall you find these anti-gay songs, it's part of the scene. that's it.
anti gay ideas exist also in other music genres like hip hop or rock, but there is not a movement (call it stereotype if you want) that connects people with the same hate. may be in some racist nazi rock this movement exists too. but they are not famous and commercial. so they have no exposure to the masses and therefore they gain less reactions.

I really like Rastafarian movement and all the Jamaican influence, but something I don't like about their ideology is how they can't stand the gay community. That's not respecting other people!

I think if we acknowledge that we are homophobic why do we care about others? What are we going to do about it.

If the lyrics are homophobic respect the land that you are in. REmove them from the list you play. This iss no conspiracy to demonize. We need to hold ourselvess to a higher standard.

I don't care abount Serbia and Africa and those other places. I want to know what my country people are do to foster peace and justice and love and harmony. We should be LEADERS not followers !!

I love Black people. We are an awesome creation. But we are some of the most homophobic people on earth. And that includes us African-Americans. I am Black, I am female and I am gay. We are some of the most hated people on the planet. Not that other cultures aren't homophobic, but since I am Black, my concerns about homophobia starts there. I love Jamaica. It is one of the most beautiful islands ever created. It's people are just as beautiful and fascinating as us. It is also one of the most dangerously homophobic places you'll ever step foot in. But it's not alone. Here is a list of some of the most dangerous places to be Black and gay (not necessarily in this order):

1. Black American Christian Church - didn't want you Jamaicans to think you're being picked on, so I saved you for second

2. Jamaica baby, that's right

3. Just about any country in Africa (but I still love the continent, the cultures and the people) including South Africa which is one of the most progressive countries in Africa to be gay, but also one of the most deadly; also includes Nigeria, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Zambia, etcetera etcetera

4. Most of the rest of the West Indies as well, but sorry, Jamaica wins this one hands down according to Human Rights Watch

5. The Ghetto anywhere in the United States

It ain't cute, but it is what it is. Getting all sensitive over Jamaica being picked on is . . . well useless really. Europe is another story altogether. But since I'm Black and travel to Black places, hey . . .

LMAO, I love it when someone can't actually argue a point so resorts to calling the other person ignorant when they can't agree.

Very tolerant and worldly of you Orville.

Thanks for playing.

Orville

You can go ahead with your anti Jamaican prejudices your attitudes speaks volumes about the kind of ignorant person you are. You obviously live in American bubble and don't know the real world.

V

You don't believe in censorship...So if white artists want to hold a concert that preaches killing black people and hanging them, they shouldn't be banned, they shouldn't be called out, they should be allowed to do so and if we don't like it we should just turn our backs to it? Give me a break...

As far as demonizing Jamaica more than other countries...news flash of the countries you listed, Jamaica, Serbia, Croatia and Russia, in only one of those countries is homosexuality illegal...you guessed it Jamaica.

So yes, I will vilify a people from a country where I can be imprisoned for 10 years for being gay, for coming to my country and singing about killing the batty man and chi chi gals...I may not understand your culture, however, it is clear that you do not understand mine if you can not see how that is a problem.

Orville

What does it accomplish to ban these Jamaican artists? If you have a choice just don't attend the concerts. I don't believe in censorship. I am against homophobia, however, I do have a problem when ONLY black artists are being targeted.

You mention Enimem but he is not being demonized in the media the way Jamaican artists are. It is pretty easy to brush all Jamaican entertainers with the western canvas of guilt.

I don't quite understand what banning them will do or accomplish? To me that's pathetic because it will solve nothing. It will only anger Reggae music fans and foster more anger. You are trying to use music to SOLVE A SOCIAL PROBLEM. Homophobia occurs all over the world, again as I said before why don't Americans demonize Russia, Croatia, and Serbia? You complain about homophobia in Jamaica yet ignore the terrifying homophobia in Europe. And yes in Russia gays are getting killed why don't you complain about that? Why doesn't GLAAD and HRC complain about state sponsored homophobia in Croatia, Serbia, and Russia? Why are you Americans once again trying to stereotype Jamaica.

You are using your Occidental lens trying to understand a culture foreign then your own.
The only thing you Americans see are young black men and you immediately demonize and pathologize Jamaican entertainers as monsters. Don't you see the subliminal messages of the media? Can't you see this?

I think this only fosters more miscommunication and anger.
You are looking at this from an American perspective I am not even sure you understand Dance Hall culture.
Okay, I see your point that homophobia does exist in Jamaica I am not disagreeing about this. However, I cringe when I read statements such as Jamaica being this incredible homophobic place. I was in Jamaica about two weeks ago and the Jamaican people are a loving people. I do have a problem with people that are not from Jamaica that don't understand Jamaican culture brand everyone as homophobic.

V

"You may remember last year when Black LGBT bloggers launched a successful campaign against Beenie Man and TOK"

Just to quote Jas and show you that it is not just gay white mafia who has a problem with this artists...food for thought

V

OK. Firstly, the community did make a big stink about Emimem and his homophobia, and I think you will find that the gay white community is not supporting him…not to mention he is completely irrelevant to today’s music. I also recall that he was banned from performing in certain cities. Secondly, please show me Marilyn Manson’s homophobia…I honestly don’t know too much about him, but for a person to pose nude in gay porn I find it strange that they would be homophobic…not that he isn’t but just like to know what exactly you are referencing.

Now I have no idea what you are reading or who you are talking to, but most gay americans do know about the serious homophobia in Russia, Serbia and Croatia. Many blogs have pointed out the atrocities and we are outraged. Jamaicans are not the only ones that are targeted as anti gay, however, none of these other countries have artists who are spewing forth hatred propaganda in a medium that is as pervasive and popular as reggae music is. I can guarantee you that if indeed it was you would hear the outrage as equally strong.

I firmly believe that Jamaica is one of the most terrifying places for gay people, just this past week two gay men were attacked by a group of 20 Jamaicans, after they had been harassed and threatened for days. 1 is in the hospital with serious injuries and the other is still missing after the gang of 20 broke into their home. There were websites out there called kill the batty man, a group of 2,000 who stoned 3 gay men while they left a pharmacy, the gay man who was chased by a crowd who jumped off a pier to avoid them and drown. I also have no idea what you mean when you say these groups suddenly care about homophobia in Jamaican Dance Hall and Reggae Music…the concern has been there for a while now.

Now I am not Jamaican, however, I most certainly have the right to examine a country’s behavior toward gay people and most certainly see that Jamaica is a gay hell on Earth(and not the only one), sorry if I am stepping on your Jamaican pride, but you can’t argue against it, and if you do, I call BS. And sorry Orville, but freedom of speech doesn’t protect hate speech.

Where are you all reading about global gay issues? I have read time and time again about the horrific events in the Middle East, Eastern Europe, Africa, etc., but for some reason it sounds like you all are just reading it for the first time...that's a bigger issues than the one you are trying to make.

Orville

I also want to point out people have a choice, if you don't like the music don't go to the concerts. I just think things need to be more fair. Again, think to yourself Jasmyne ask yourself, why are people just targeting these young black Jamaican men? Why aren't the media targeting the homophobes in white culture? Why isn't anyone making a big fuss about the white gay activists that were attacked in Moscow May 2007 by white Russian people? Why aren't people talking about the serious homophobia in Serbia and Croatia? Why just focus on young black men entertainers? There is a lot of subversive racism beneath the surface I feel you Americans are ignoring.

Orville

I do not agree with the homophobic lyrics of Beenie Man and other Reggae artists. However, I am a Canadian with a Jamaican background.

In Toronto Canada last September I was quoted in the Toronto Star when an Elephant Man concert was cancelled. Why don't the white gay groups have anti gay artists such as Marilyn Mason and Enimem banned? Why just target black entertainers?

Also, I get really mad when non Jamaicans say Jamaica is so hompphobic yet ignore other hot spots where homophobia exists. Why don't Americans complain about the serious homophobia in Russia, Serbia, and Croatia? Go to You Tube look at the homophobic and violent white people that are against gays. Why are Jamaican people targeted as anti gay only? This is the problem with thiis framework the occidential countries are creating a pathology and demonizing Jamaican people. I take offense to this because I see the deleterious racism.

Here is the link to the article where I speak out about the double standarss of the white gay organizations

http://www.atlanticcallcentres.com/News/article/261932

Although I do see your point about homophobia. I have a serious problem when black entertainers are being targeted by the white gay mafia.

Don't you see Jasmyne that these white gay power groups have their pernicious and racist anti black agenda? They are trying to demonize these young black men as savage monsters men. I think it is hard for non Jamaicans to understand Caribbean culture. Also, what about the freedom of speech? Look, I don't condone homophobia but I also have a choice.

However, I question the motivation tactics of white gay power organizations such as GLAAD and HRC. You don't even question why these groups suddenly care about homophobia in Jamaican Dance Hall and Reggae Music. Also, I know this won't sound PC but you are not Jamaican.

I am concerned when non Jamaicans that clearly don't understand Caribbean culture, are going to demonize us and pathologize us. Again, why just target black entertainers? Also, I have a serious problem when white people patronize black folks and tell us to understand tolerance? Tolerance and understanding is a two way street.
