It’s official. Actor and humanitarian Isaiah Washington has announced the opening of the Chief Foday Golia Memorial School in Sierra Leone’s rural village of Njala Kendema. The school opened on the November 15, 2007, the same day as the inauguration of Sierra Leone’s new President H. E. Earnest Koroma.
The school is expected to seat 150 students upon completion in August 2007 with plans to accommodate more students in the future. Currently, the village of Njala Kendema has 115 children of primary education age (K-5th grades). In addition to classrooms.
On the naming of the school, Washington shared, “I was told that Chief Golia prayed that a school be built for his children in his village of Njala Kendema on his death bed. I am just trying to fulfill that prayer, seeing that ‘Isaiah’ means ‘Salvation of God.’”
70 percent of Sierra Leone’s population lives below the poverty line and 26 percent are unable to meet the basic food requirements. For many families, education is the only hope of their children finding work outside of the country to support their family in the future.
