In light of the Don Imus remarks and Black America's outrage over the white shock jocks use of the words 'nappy-headed hos," on national television in reference to the Rutgers University women's basketball team, I thought now was just as good a time to start a new series called "Can't Sing That No More."

Periodically, I will feature some of America's top songs by African-Americans that use derogatory terms to refer to women and sometimes worse.

As I continue to say, we can't blame whites for calling us out of our names when we ourselves condone it with our hips and our chips.

Today's "Can't Sing That No More" comes from Black America's own steppin' child molester R. Kelly.

Among other things, this song basically says he's a flirt, he's a pimp, your girl is a ho, any girl is a ho, all the girls want him, he's rich and cute and he's going to screw her, even if she's your girl.

Great post Jasmyne. I have such a problem with our community defending rappers and singers such as R. Kelly, there is such a double standard with who is allowed to degrade us and who isn't. My "hips and chips" have been checked and I try to put my money where my values are.

My issue is not the words used, but the greater meaning of his statements. If the word "ho", "nigger", or "nigga" was to be eliminated today, would the racism or sexism stop? If we all cease using these words and Imus called the women "they are a bunch of primiscuous dark-skinned women", would it make anyone feel better? Would it be better if Imus instead touched a black woman inappropriately?

The point is not his words, but it is the meaning behind it, which promotes bigotry. Basically if you are not a white, heterosexual male you are second class. And the overall meaning is that women are thought of as a slut or useless. The overall meaning of people of color, being thought of and treated like second class.

Now Jasmyne, I think you have every right to post what you want to. But I think if we are serious, we need these deeper issues.
