NATIONAL CAMPAIGN KICKED OFF TO RETIRE SHIRLEY Q. LIQUOR FOR GOOD

A national campaign to retire white gay comedian Charles Knipp’s character Shirley Q. Liquor, a self described inarticulate Black woman on welfare with 19 kids, has been kicked off by activists after the success in canceling a scheduled performance in Los Angeles during Black History Month.

After an outcry from community activists in Los Angeles and a threatened protest in front of the venue for its prior refusal to cancel the offensive performance done in blackface, activists have now decided to launch a nationwide campaign to ban upcoming performances by Charles Knipp as Shirley Q. Liquor in New Orleans, Louisiana and Hartford, Connecticut, also scheduled for Black History Month.

An online petition has been launched to gather signatures in favor of banning the public performance of comedian Charles Knipp in blackface as Shirley Q. Liquor and activists have begun targeting venues that have booked Knipp to perform in New Orleans and Hartford with the goal of having the performance cancelled.

In an effort to support community activists in New Orleans and Hartford, protesters in Los Angeles have vowed to work with community leaders across the nation to assist in their efforts to cancel upcoming performances by Charles Knipp as Shirley Q. Liquor.

Shirley Q. Liquor and Betty Butterfield have brought me hours of joy. I love being able to laugh at stereotypes of both whites and blacks. The funniest thing just happened: turns out the Shirley Q. show in L.A. will be going on as planned. Different day, venue etc. but it's happening. All the "cancellation" buzz was to shut Jasmyne and her clone army up for awhile so the Factory could host their anniversary party without threats of riots and violence (which were very real). Chuck's management wasn't involved in this rescheduling but thanks to the fans, the show will go on. Thank goodness for free speech in America. Nice try, Jasmyne. After all your bitter ranting and raving, you can't use your bullying tactics to take away people's right to think and choose for themselves, how they can or can't spend their money or how an artist should present himself according to YOUR standards of "decency." Your fight to prove that censorship is permissible has failed. You have the right to do whatever you want. Warren, you don't make any sense. You start of by saying that there is no need for us to talk about the subject, because fans of Knipp aren't going to change their minds, and then you say that no one is communicating. Make up your mind. I think this is the problem with fans of Knipp and those that think like him; you really aren't open to listening to people's opinion's, so you can't understand where others are coming from. I think many of you should look at how this experience brought out the worst in you. We live in America where people can believe in whatever they want. There's no need to name call or belittle anyone for having an opinion, and the truth is that Mr. Knipp is a comedian who has put his work out there for all the world to see and judge, that's what artists do. I think it's good that we all can say yes or no at something and move on. To try and convince a fan of Mr. Knipp (like me) that he's racist isn't going to work, and vice-versa.
