What Of It??

I am glad that a pastor is standing up for what is right and holy. The Bible clearly states that homosexuality is an abomination. Denouncing homosexuality as a perversion is not synonymous with hating gay and lesbian people. The focus on hating people is just that -- hating people. However, focus on preserving marriage is a right and privilege of Christian leaders who are not willing to back down. So, I say, HURRAY for Bishop Long's efforts to protect the sanctity of marriage -- which is one man, one woman -- period.

To the person who smashed Patti Labelle; what is your problem! Just because she is friends with him dosent make her a bad person. Now you said your self that Patti has been a long time supporter of the gay community, so why now would she all of a sudden change? She haven't and never will. She just recently did this huge concert for some kind of gay organization. Friends have differences, she can't force her friends to believe in everything she believes in. Everyone has friends with different beliefs and backgrounds.
Damn that ignorat, half as comment piss me off! I must assume that you are not a true fan of the legendary 5 octave range diva, because if you were you would not have turned on her that fast and easy

dontrack

Patti is the most giving and loving to her fans than most entertainers today or before. She was invited to sing at one of THE gospel events of the year. She has, in NO WAY denoucnced gay people. The igorant bishop, Eddie Wrong, is NOT synonymous with the HATRED OF GAYS! He is just brainwashed by the rules and regulations of organized religion. If Ms. Pat did a concert sponsored by Hitler, and closed the show with "Somwhere Over the Rainbowschinitzel".... then, I would have a big problem with her. Not for this....please. Bishop Dong is not Hitler. There's a gospel album coming out people need to know about it because it will make people feel good like all of Ms. Patti's music(except for "I Got Eyes in the Back of My Head"). For the people who have a problem with Ms. Patti... get over it and find more productive things to bitch about.
Yours Truly,

A Gay Guy in Chicago

Tiffney

Why do we have to lash out all the time. Pattie has given more than just her music, she has shared her life with ALL of us (stright & gay). Pattie didn't ask gay people to flock to her shows and buy her music, even though I'm sure she's thankful but, not just for the support of the gay community but stright as well.
She's opened her arms to everyone. Keep it real, are gay men go crazy over women that has flare "DIVAS" we call them. They never bother to check the back ground of these women to see if their homophobic or anything, so later on when someone finds out something that may be a little displeaseing to the ear some tend to get a little bothered.

For right now all we know is that Pattie isn't gay and because we may love her music and her shows, shoes, and clothes, doesn't mean she has to agree with our life style. Thats just like my family, they all love me and support me but they believe differently. I don't think Pattie ment any harm, and I feel that her feelings my be really hurt right now because I guess it doesn't matter that she performed at Long Beach pride or that she stands strong for HIV awareness. Why are we so quick to judge and turn our backs. She's where she is today because of that wonderful voice she was blessed with and the love and support of her fans but for me I'm honered to have such a woman in our corner.

Pattie, my wife and I love you so much :)

This message is posted on Patti's website

"Throughout my career, I’ve been blessed to have fans from all walks of life. I treasure that love and support. Members of the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender community have always been some of my biggest champions, which I don’t take for granted. I’ve always tried to embrace everyone and practice non-judgment. So, it pains me to see and hear that a community I have loved and embraced would boycott me. Although we may not always share the same backgrounds or views, I value opportunities to work with various artists and individuals. This ability to connect with different people and diverse groups has enriched me as an artist and a human being. I unfortunately do not know all of the personal opinions of the people I have associated with. All I know is who I am, what I am, what I feel and who I treasure and love. And the Gay community is loved and adored by me.”

This is good news for me. As I posted earlier; I took the advice of jasmyne and I wrote Patti's Fan Club president requesting clarification and I am happy I got it. Patti officially has my support, once again and hopefully forever. I pray she learned a lesson to stay away from people like Eddie Long; I mean would she do a concert for "the head of klu-klux-klan"? At any rate; it was a smart move to make to post the above message...Patti knows where her deepest suppost lies from. I don't believe she had any "homophobic" intentions.

shirley

I think we the world should boycott this black lesbian nigger whoever the fuck the bith is. This is a free country we can do, associate with or make our money however we want. so F_U_C_K Y_O_U B_I_T_C_H

WHO GIVES A FUCK WHAT YALL THINK ANYWAY. GO SIT ON SOME DICK OR SUCK SOME COCK AND LEAVE PATTI THE FUCK ALONE. SHE CAN BUY AND SELL ALL YOU COCKSUCKERS. I HOPE YOU GET AIDS BITCH.

I must say,I was truly surprised to hear of a call for a boycott of Patti LaBelle and her music because of her appearance with Bishop Long. Yes, Patti should have informed herself of his stand on issues prior to her performance at his church. But, before we get our draws all bent out of shape, we need to go to Patti directly and dialogue with her about where she stands on this. She genuinely may have been uniformed of his record on same-sex marriage and his homophobic stance. Let's find out before we jump the gun. We need to do whatever we do with a loving and non-accusatory approach before we have all the facts.

And as for Patti's stand on gay people, she has never been pro-gay for financial gain or career advantage. I have followed Patti's career and life for over 40 years. She has always had a loyal gay following and she has always honored and supported them. This is a woman whose best friends have always been the outcast and marginalized: prostitutes, gay men and lesbians, etc. To say that she has done this only for personal gain is not to know Patti well at all. I probably shouldn't say this, but I will She loves gay people and even has those who are very close to her in her family and as friends-and that's all I'm going to say about that. So before you accuse of her self-aggrandizement and hypocrisy, get your facts straight. She loves and treats all with respect. Should she have appeared with Bishop Long? Probably not. Was this a case of situational ignorance? Probably. Maybe the next time she will do research beforehand on those who hire her. But to boycott one of our greatest allies is ludicrous and non-productive.

Dialogue, dialogue, dialogue!!!

Now Bishop Eddie Long is the one who you should consider boycotting and encouraging gay individuals not to support his church. Peace!

RODNEY

PEOPLE PLEASE GROW UP!!!!
PATTI IS A NATIONAL TREASURE. IF YOU WERE STRONGER IN YOUR HOMO STUFF, THIS KIND OF STUFF WOULD NOT BOTHER YOU. PERSONNALY I DONT LET THINGS PEOPLE SAY AFFECT MY LIFE. WHO CARES??? IVE NEVER HEARD OF YOU. WHO ARE YOU ANYWAY?? IF YOU DONT LIKE WHAT MS PATTI SAYS THEN HANDLE IT ON YOUR OWN. WHY DO YOU NEED OTHERS TO HELP YOU. STOP WHINING LIKE A LITTLE FAGGOT AND SHUT THE FUCK UP.

PS: DONT "FUCK" WITH MS PATTI!!!!

Carlos

I support Ms. Patti. Not you jasmyne. (notice how I didn't capitalize your name to represent non-importance) You are just trying to cause controversy in the worng area. She was a performer in a church. Why wouldn't someone praise God in that arena when that's part of her belief. And when was the last time you said anything GOOD about Patti Labelle - like how long she has lasted in the business, her live performances that can't be touched by any other artists, how busy she is doing her show/her HSN/her music/performances/appearances (like the church) around the world constantly, etc etc. Just remember it is possible to have religion and be gay...it's even more possible to have religion be straight AND be a supporter of gays.
Much respect! From a male, Christian, half Latino and half Asian, professional, and most of all a PROUD supporter of Ms. Patti Labelle!

K

I just want to say that I support Patti LaBelle, and I don't think that she consciously appeared with him realizing the fact that he was a homophobe. I myself didn't know that he was a homophobe until now, however I dont think that this should be held against Patti. I still support and love her.

Erick

Thank you, Jasymne for this piece on Patti LaBelle and her affiliation with homophobic pastors. I applaud you for your courage to tell us we are not required to 'turn the other cheek' and look away when these sorts of things happen. Nothing excuses it, nothing. We as black lesbians and gays continue to voluntarily allow ourselves to be oppressed by the larger black community. I may be wrong but this at times is more frustrating than dealing with racism of the white gay/straight communities. Most of us have the experience and tools to challenge racism but our tools for fighting black homophobia are either hidden or not there to begin with. So thank you for reminding me to challenge myself to stand up for what is right for me in particular and all of us in general.

David C.

I have followed Patti Labelle for many years. And I must say that I am very disapointed with her decision to appear with Eddie Long. " The Children" as Patti refers to the gay community in almost all of her concerts should be outraged by this. I am glad that someone decided to bring this up.

Twan86695

Thank you Jasmyne for bringing this to my attention. I hope and pray Patti does not share the same beliefs as Bishop Long. However, Patti must have known how this may misrepresent her in the gay community. I have a bigger issue with "gay men" who continue to worship and financially support Bishop Long. But, I am about to suggest something; not too far off..we all have heard the saying.."you are the company, you keep"...what if..Patti knows something Long..something that drew her to him..something about his own personal life and sexuality..perhaps Patti is becoming Long's "fag hag"....

I doubt the above is true..but we never know...any man that has to minister, while wearing a "wife beater" or "tight muscle shirt"..to show off his "not so muscular, rather "fat" chest" is a truly a "gay man" undercover.

Thanks again for sharing..and I will contact Patti to inquire about this matter....if it turns out to be true, that she support Long; then Patti has lost a faithful fan. The struggle continues...

Be blessed!

Laura

Derrick from Philly, i do understand that this measure was supposed to be some kind of consciousness rasing gesture, isn't supposed to go into effect until 2008, and will likely be shot down in court (which will naturally piss off the conservatives). but i have MAJOR problems that it was voted in by conservative members and signed into law by yet another conservative. it amazes me that Chambers can't see that particular writing on the wall.

btw, i also see the difference between segregation and separatism, which is what "afrocentrics" advocate. but when it's state-sponsored, in this country, no way.

if this country was ever capable of real "separate-but-equal", say along the same lines as "tolerance" in the Netherlands, it might be one thing. but conservatives have NEVER gotten over desegregation and are still targeting the Warren court for it. for me, that is one of many spots where the afrocentric POV falls totally flat.

Derrick from Philly

Thanks Kevin, Tyeese & Don. I just assumed over these last 30 years that Patti had a special understanding and relationship with gay people. How could we give so much love and support to her, make her a (maybe THE) black gay icon, and then find out it might be all about her career--that maybe she aint all that "liberal" towards black gay folks. Maybe we shouldn't worship our black divas (Patti, Diana, Donna, Aretha,Gladys, Nina, Chaka, Eartha, and the younger ones)unconditionally. I PRAY she don't get Holy on us like Donna did--boy, she had the white gay boys evil at her.

Derrick from Philly

Thanks for the link to the NY Times article, Laura.
I don't like the idea of state sanctioned/ordered segregation of the public schools--what black person in their right mind could? But I understand State Senator Chambers frustration with racism and the contempt some school board administrators have for black children all over this country. Many of my Afrocentric frien...well, people I've known, believe that a segregated school environment might be best to educate black children.
It's funny though, because I do believe in "special" highschools for transgendered young folks, like they have in New York. But supporting segregation and being on the side of white racists is an insult to the entire civil rights movement since slavery ended.

Laura

"Kevin, I have problems with the white so called CHRISTIAN CONSERVATIVES because they are anti gay and many of them also supported segregation years ago."

years ago...try right now, today.

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/04/15/us/15omaha.html

and look who's leading the charge.

i have been saying for many years that the Eddie Longs and Jesse Lee Petersons of the world have allowed themselves to become the facade of neo-segregationism by playing the gay vs black card. they are the face of writing discrimination back into the laws of this country. well, those that weren't just crossed out in pencil, like that 1913 anti-miscegenation law they dusted off to keep gay couples from migrating to MA.

their conservative christian segregationist backers have only begun. people need to wake the f. up.

Kevin E. Bynes

All,

I think that it is because of Patti's long relationship with gay community that we should hold her accountable. I have suggested that folks contact her through her website to "Pull Her Coat" as well as not buying her new album until she apologizes. If we give Patti an excuse to participate in our oppression (Money, Love of Gay Men, traditional Christianity, Blue bunnies at the easter show etc.) she will continue to participate in our oppression. Why doesn't she sing for the National Clan Rally too. I'm sure they'd pay well. Right? Wrong. She tried it and we should not rubber stamp the try just becasue she's been known to give us a "girl friend," "Miss thing," or "fierce," every now and again. Just because she was friends with Sylvester and covered his songs doesn't mean she is our friend. If she is we need only for her to prove it.

Thanks,

Kevin

Tyesse St John

HOWEVER- ANYBODY THAT'S CLOSE TO PATTI KNOWS THAT THE AFFECTION THAT SHE SHOWS TOWARD GAY MEN IS ACTUALLY PART OF HER STAGE PERSONA IN REAL LIFE PATTI IS REALLY CATTY -ASK ANY BODY THAT'S CLOSE TO HER CAMP.
I WOULD SAY I LIKE OR LOVED GAYS TO IF MY RECORD SELLS WERE PARTIALLY GENERATED BECAUSE OF IT.(ALTHOUGH PATTI HAS NOT HAD A HIT SINCE HER 1997 ALBUM "FLAME")
WHAT THE BLACK GLBT COMMUNITY HAS TO UNDERSTAND IS THE PERSON YOU SEE ON TV OR ON STAGE IS NOT ALWAYS THE PERSON YOU WOULD SEE BEHIND CLOSED DOORS.

Tyesse St John

I LOVE PATTI

jbyrd

t makes a good point. I appreciate the call to action Jasmyne and Kevin, and I don't say this to "attack and sabotage our own community leaders" as has been suggested in the past, but some attempt at dialogue would seem to produce more clarity on this issue, whereas a "boycott" of an established legend would, frankly, come off as reactionary and "extra".
